Dia got faster

You told us Dia was feeling sluggish, and you were right. So, we’ve released a series of thoughtful improvements that make everything feel lighter (and faster). You should already feel some of this, but we’re not finished just yet.

Here’s what we’ve done so far:

No more slowing down over time

Keep your Dia open for days, and it might start lagging. Or at least, it used to thanks to memory leaks. We found a few places where memory wasn’t being released properly—plus a platform bug that kept some views around after switching tabs. In some cases, that added up to gigabytes of extra memory.

Now that's fixed, Dia should feel more speedy (even if you rarely restart your laptop 👀).

Some smaller things that were adding up

#1

Animations on the new tab page now use fewer resources. We tuned when they run to reduce CPU and GPU usage — small savings that add up, especially when other tabs are busy.

#2

The command bar is faster. By moving work out of the suggestion path and warming up favicon and database caches at startup, results show up more quickly as you type.

#3

And now, if your system is under load, we skip the extra step that decides whether input goes to search or Dia—saving resources when your machine needs it.

The work doesn't stop there

The best way to help us keep improving Dia is by joining our Early Birds program. When you join Early Birds, you’ll get early access to new features and fixes—and you’ll also get a direct line to provide us feedback on your experience.

If you hit a performance issue

Go to Help → Record a Performance Issue.

Pro tip: Include a description of what feels off and make sure the issue actually happens while you're recording ,so we capture it (and fix it)!

You can also tweet your feedback to us @diabrowser. Speaking of, we’d like to shout out @qbmgabriel and @alymoursy. They didn’t just report performance issues but followed up with videos, tested our fixes, and helped us validate that things were actually getting better. That’s the type of collaboration we love here at BCNY.

That’s it for this week.

If something feels better, we’re glad. If something still feels off, tell us! We’re always trying to make Dia better (and faster), and you’re a big part of that.

My favorite working filmmaker Radu Jude’s new movie Kontinental ‘25 is getting released in the US this Friday, so I've been thinking about his previous Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World a lot this week. Riotously funny & also deeply morbid, it’s like the Romanian Ulysses. There’s a quote from him I keep coming back to — about how in things that seem obsolete, “you discover that you can reinterpret them in a new context and they look much more modern.” I'm always looking for inspiration in the overlooked & forgotten as well.
