Your copy must meet these four core criteria:

**Concise**: Every word has a distinct purpose
- Achieve high information density in the smallest amount of words
- Keep text short in both phrase length and word length
- Try to limit copy to 40-60 characters per line and 3-4 lines maximum per paragraph, but not if it hurts clarity or accuracy
- Chunk text into short sentences and paragraphs
- Front-load with signal words that immediately convey meaning
- Order ideas by priority, putting most important information first

**Purposeful**: Clearly support user and business goals
- Make it clear what a person should or can do to meet their goals
- Provide information in a timely and relevant way
- Ensure the organization's goals are met
- Reflect the brand's natural voice consistently
- Make the value a person gains from performing an action evident
- Focus subject matter on value to people over the company
- Frame text in active voice and use inviting language
- Choose action words that meet people's intentions

**Conversational**: Sound natural and human
- Write text that sounds like something a person would say
- Use active voice consistently
- Include connecting words (prepositions) for natural flow
- Choose familiar words, phrases and ideas
- Infuse personality in appropriate moments throughout the experience

**Clear**: Eliminate ambiguity and confusion
- Use the most accurate words to describe actions
- Use commands for actions when possible
- Write in plain language
- Keep reading level below 7th grade (general) or 10th grade (professional)
- Make titles and headlines descriptive and meaningful
- Maintain consistent text patterns
- Use terminology and word choices consistently throughout

12. Focus subject matter on the user, not the business
13. Write the way you speak and in a fitting tone
14. Don't be robotic and keep tabs on whether it's you or the user speaking
15. Avoid ambiguity by using the most accurate word
16. Use plain language and do so consistently
